Who we are

The European Students` Conference (ESC) is one of the largest biomedical conferences for students worldwide and has been a main event at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin for many years. Addressing young scientists, graduate-, post-graduate- and phD students and everyone interested in biomedical research, the ESC represents an interdisciplinary platform for international scientific exchange between numerous countries, students, clinicians and professors from different fields of research and various cultures. General emphasis is put on a high quality scientific and educational programme. This is realised in a series of scientific sessions, workshops and lectures that cover different fields of medicine.

When the conference was founded in 1989, it started as a relatively small event, the so called “Studientage”. Only one year later the fall of the Berlin Wall marked the reunion of Eastern and Western Germany and the ESC aimed to bridge the gap between the once divided country. Soon the network began to expand and cross boarders in Europe to bring Eastern and Western Europe closer together and to support the scientific exchange between students.

In 2003 the Charité became the largest university hospital in Europe with the fusions of the medical faculties of Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität. The European Union enlarged once more and the conference now focused on the member states in its function of connecting European students giving them a platform to discuss their research projects.

Even though the structure and the size of the conference changed over the years, the basic idea has remained: to promote the international and interdisciplinary exchange between young scientific researchers, experienced scientists and biomedical business. The ESC enables students to socialise with fellow students from all over the world, to exchange ideas as well as experiences in the scientific world. The aim is to encourage the participants to present their work to a wider audience and strengthen the ties between scientific research and society. This year for the 26th time the European Students` Conference took place at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

ESC in 2015

The topic of this year ́s conference was Science or Fiction Imagine the Future of Medicine. We wanted to explore the impact of innovative technologies, get to know their potential applications in medicine and strive for the cutting-edge of research. At the same time - by following the principle “from bench to bedside” - possible drawbacks, ethical impacts, and realistic implementation were discussed. Apart from exciting practical workshops and excellent scientific lectures in different fields of medicine, the conference offered networking opportunities with peers in the biomedical field, real challenges in cooperation with international companies, gelled together by a diversified and thrilling social program in the cultural heart of Germany.
